Weapons
Tuesday November 3, 2009 12:36pm
If the turtles were to remove their colored bandanas and were not carrying any weapons, you would not be able to physically tell them apart.
The weapons they carry are one of their most defining characteristics! If their weapons play such a huge role in how the audience defines
the Ninja Turtles, wouldn't you agree their weapons should receive the proper treatment?
First all, the turtles do not "need" weapons. Without them they could fight crime just as effectively. With that said, why give them any weapons at
all unless it was to use them as the weapons were intended to be used?
So where did they get their weapons, was Splinter involved?
As the person who trained the turtles and understands their abilities and character better than anyone, Splinter would have
also decided who shall use which weapon. Ensuring the right turtle receives the right weapon is a huge responsibility. The sword
is suited for a different personality than the sai, and only the right personality will bring out the weapon's true potential. This
is something only a ninja master would know, like Splinter.
So why were the turtles chosen to use their weapons?
The first thing that must be done is to analyze each weapon to better understand how they would compliment the user. The weapons in our
vision are their own character and possess their own personality. In a sense, this allows us to create a relationship between each
turtle and their weapon. The more they understand each other, the more powerful they will become together.
So what are some interesting and cool ways these weapons can be used by the turtles?
Donatello
|
His personality is calculating, the staff is not a sharp weapon, but when used properly it possesses the power to crush a man's
skull. Distance is his ally, the staff is long range and will lose effectiveness if controlled through rage. When all four turtles
are engaged in a fight, Donatello will often be the first to attack due to his range and destructive power. His attacks have the
potential of causing the most damage because he can use momentum to his advantage, when controlled properly through precise
movements in the wrist and hips the tip of the staff can become a battering ram or a supersonic whip.
|
Raphael
|
His personality is probably one of the most prominent in the group, always fueled by rage, Raphael can use his sai to in the moment
without much thought. As Raphael attacks with the sai, you can almost hear him saying "Bring it on!!!" Our goal was to find a way to
use Raphael's anger and impulsive nature to his advantage. A midrange weapon like the sai is perfect for a personality like Raphael
allowing him to control the pace of a fight.
|
Leonardo
|
Leonardo is a bit of a perfectionist with a knack for precision. Swords are deadly weapons, and Leo has two! Swords strike a good
balance between offense and defense. With one precise stroke to a man's thumb, a man will never be able to hold any kind of weapon
again. Leonardo is also the most emotionally composed of the four turtles and the least likely to go into a fit of rage hacking off
the arms and legs of his enemies. The sword has two sides, sharp and flat. Leonardo trains every day to better understand which
side is most appropriate for the situation.
|
Michelangelo
|
It did not take Splinter long to pick up on Michelangelo's creative and fun loving mind. The nun-cnuck is a weapon of surprise making
it very difficult to gauge the direction of attack. This is a perfect weapon for a ninja prankster. Michelangelo will use his nun-chucks
in a way you have never seen before, causing you to look left when he is attacking from the right. Even the most focused and skilled
opponents have trouble predicting Michelangelo's movements. Nun-chucks are also very well suited to a personality that does not
become angry in a fight. By reading your opponent's emotions you can learn to control their attacks. Michelangelo is always in the best
of spirits, even in the most dismal situation. This makes Michelangelo extremely dangerous.
|
So how do we take what everyone has already seen and take it to the next level?
The only way to do this is to develop their strengths in a way that forces the turtles to constantly improve their skills and develop new ways
to use their weapons. The easy way out is to simply make their attacks more powerful. We call it the "Dragonball Effect" (aka: just
make a bigger fireball), but that is just the lazy writer's way out. We are the ninjaturtles-movie.com team and we refuse to be lazy
because the audience deserves better than that. Take Michelangelo for example, he uses nun-chucks, but what if he also had a good knowledge
of ju-jitsu and were able to combine his techniques in a way that maximizes the potential of the nun-chucks using principles of
ju-jitsu. What if Michelangelo used his nun-chucks for more than just a clobbering tool? What if he used his nun-chucks to put his enemies
into holds, break limbs, use their energy against themselves, and as a way to apply extreme pressure to his enemy's limbs while in motion?
I get goose bumps just thinking about all the TOTALLY AWESOME ways to make good use of the Ninja Turtles' weapons.
Wouldn't you like to see Leonardo actually use his swords instead of tossing them into the ceiling, hanging on the handles, and then
kicking the bad guys in the face?
In our vision for the movie, we spent a lot of time developing the characters of the Ninja Turtles' weapons, how they should be used, how
they can be developed, and even where they came from. What we have told you is only scratching the surface.

Awesome analysis, What is so funny is that i asked myself that same question every time I saw the movie and watched Leo throw his swords in the ceiling. And just imagining Mikey with Jits is bad ass!

the detail you guys are envisioning makes me proud as a fan, i hope a studio will be able to appreciation your vision

YES YES YES. Your description of Mikey's fight-style is spot on to how it should be portrayed. One thing that I would flip the "shell" out for is if you could make Mikey use his nunchaku to choke somebody out. In some old martial arts tapes I have (I'm a big 'Arts junkie =P), a man uses a pair of them to flip somebody over his back and then break their neck. You guys rock!

perfect, i've discovered this site yesterday and i am thrilled that your vision is what i've been looking for for years. i've been a turtle fan since i came out the womb and you guys have finnally got the idea. here's a tip, get donnie yen as a fight choreographer. in his movie dragon tiger gate he showcases nunchucks, bo staffs and sais and his action is great. search donnie yen fight scenes, you won't be disappointed

Thanks so much for our support. I am a big donnie yen fan. His latest movie (IP man) is one of my favorite kung-Fu Movies =D.

That donnie scene was sick. never heard of it b4, and never seen a bo staff used like that. it truly can be used like a supersonic whip. I too would like to see mikey with jitz, too see how it compares to the others in training or the heat of battle. haha booya kashat!

in addition to the personality trait of the weapons, you might want to try and discuss the color psychology regarding the bandana colors and the reflection that that choice places on the turtles.
Blue is typically a color that denotes a certain calmness and tranquility with a degree of level headedness. There is even research that shows that there is a higher degree of production in blue rooms, which reflects leos training regiment.
Red is a high emotion color that tends to denote anger and emotional volitility. Its is bold and passionate in character and it has also been seen as the complete opposite of blue, which works in regards to many of the TMNT storylines.
Orange is another high energy color, however is calmer than red. It also can symbolize a sense of happiness and flamboyance. Mikey has always been a "fun wild card" character and orange shows off this quality.
Purple has always been associated with royalty and wisdom. I agree that it is not a perfect fit for donny, it works better than anything else. There is not really a color that denotes being technologically proficent. However purple very really occurs in nature, but is a common flame color in many chemical reactions.
I have always look at splinter with one of two colors. Oviously brown is the most prominent, but that is typically not a chosen color of his. Brown tends to be a calming but steadier than a blue and gives of a feeling of dependibility and being down-to-earth. Also, when wearing brown, it gives you an impression of being older and a little more worn down and tired.
I also tend to occasionally think of splinter in gray clothing, typically rags if anything. Gray works to show old age and wisdom. Being a mixture of black and white give splinter a certain dicotomy. He is both cynical about possible human interactions to the point he arms the turtles, but also optimistic that the world can be fixed in some manner.

This would be epic if you guys did this. I've thought about this for years and finally someone else agrees with me. I really hope you guys make this a reality. I've been waiting years for this. Love the ideas with Michelangelo, my personal fav.

"If the turtles were to remove their colored bandanas and were not carrying any weapons, you would not be able to physically tell them apart."
Actually you can, two of them anyway but even then it would be a 50/50 if they stood still. Otherwise I could tell them apart by how they behave and stand.
Raphael is lighter in color than his brother, Don being the darkest. The toys had them each with a separate color.
Don would stand in a way that show he is always thinking, raph would cross his arms and tap his foot, leo would be meditating or standing still, mike couldn't stand still if his life depended on it.
So I probably could tell them apart.
I don't see Donatello being the first to attack. I see him getting distracted analyzing the scene. If anything Raph would be the first to attack due to his anger .... "and destructive power" After-all, he brash and hotheaded.
I never knew a sai was a midrange weapon. I always assumed it was a close range weapon, made specifically for deflection or blocking of an attack.
It would be cool to have Mikey use his Nunchaku
to put his enemies into holds, use their energy against themselves, but I am not so sure he should or would break limbs, or as a way to apply extreme pressure to his enemy's limbs while in motion. He's too light hearted and carefree for that kind of thing.
Everything else is cool though.

I Also remember an episode from the new series where mikey has a rematch in the battlenexus and he uses breakdancing with his nuchaku. you gotta fit that in there it will be great!!!

@ Tim Tilley
Sai are actually a bit longer than the general media think. A sai fit for the user (from the cross) is supposed to be as long as the forearm, the tip ending at the elbow. Typically, a knife or hand-grip spikes would be short range. Sai, Nunchaku, and small swords (ninjaken/wakazashi) would be midrange. Bo, Katana, and polearms woud be long range. Some sai are designed to be thrown also, but not so far as to be considered a projectile. =P

i love this i always wonder how thay chosen ther weponds
One more thing in the 2003 cartoon how would you explan when the turtles fought robo turtle thay had to use each others weponds to defeat it? If you can please send feedback.

(even though I'm not on the creative team haha) Theo, the Turtles are familiar with all types of weapons. They trained with every type of weapon Splinter had, and then once they were old enough he gave them a personal weapon that matched their comfortable style. He didn't train them in only one weapon. They still even practice with other weapons, because a Ninja must be a master of his enemy as equally as himself. (but they specialize/are the best with their respective weapon).

@Charlie
Yeah I remember that too!

Raphael is undoubtedly my most beloved turtle of all! Luke, Steve, could you shed some light on exactly how Raph would use his Sais? Also, to you two (who I think are Turtle geniuses), would it make some sense for Raph to implement an art such as Krav Maga into his fighting style since Krav Maga is a fierce form of martial arts?

I love all the description and ideas to display the turtles fighting styles and that if you just remember there personality traits you'll make one good movie.

What the freak. Spliter's weapon isn't even on here. That is jacked yo. How in the F will Splinter protect himself?...against mousers and Shredder. I am really upset.
Posted by Terrell Hannah on Tuesday March 16, 2010 at 11:31am
I think it'd be beneficial to make each turtle's physique different. Kind of like what the paintings depict: Raphael brooding with bulging muscles, Donatello tall and muscular, Leonardo slim yet defined and Michaelangelo somewhere in the middle. lol

I agree that this is a big problem. I'm pretty good at suspended disbelief and all that, but the weapons are a particular sore spot that I can't get over. They have awesome weapons, they are awesome martial artists, why am I seeing cartoony stunts?
