Ninja Turtles: Secret of the Movie

Saturday November 21, 2009 4:42pm

What made the turtles a success in the past?

Ninja Turtles were a huge hit with children in the late 1980's. The concept of a "ninja" was very exciting and still relatively new to American culture. Ninja Turtles had everything a child would want to see all wrapped up into one show, ninjas, mutants, pizza, skate boards, and funny jokes. In contrast, shows like GI-JOE were more true to life. The superhero genre had not yet taken off in the way it has over the last decade as a result, the audience was not as spoiled by special effects and big budget productions as they are today.

In 1990 the first live action movie was made for the relatively small price of 13.5 million and grossed a little over 200 million worldwide. It was the first successful live action movie that began as an animated series. People were excited to see their Saturday morning heroes come to life on the big screen. However, as Ninja Turtles grew more popular, more hands went in the decision making pot. Passion and creativity were slowly replaced by a committee of businessmen. It was unfortunate that the next three films did not find the same success as their predecessor.

Our challenge is to bring back the fire and excitement that people had for the first live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.

Why did that level of success not continue?

Very simply put, the people that are writing for Ninja Turtles now, have a vision that is completely out of touch with the audience and most especially the fans.

The movie that we have created is not targeted at the current generation of children. We wrote our movie for the children who grew up with Ninja Turtles in the 80's and 90's. Children of today will not fall in love with Ninja Turtles of the 80's, they need an upgraded version. A better example is, kids don’t want a Nintendo game system anymore, they want a Nintendo Wii or and X-Box, they need an upgrade from what children of the 80’s found awesome.

We have worked very hard to make our movie darker without loosing touch with the teenage spirit of the turtles themselves. In our movie, you will laugh harder, be on the edge of your seat, and understand the inner struggles each turtles must face in order to become the heroes you have come to know and love.

The audience of the late 80's had much lower expectations for special effects and life like realism. Today's generation have been spoiled by every conceivable trick in the book with movies like Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man, and Batman Begins. These movies are awesome because they got the upgrade. You cannot get away with a weak storyline, poorly conceived special effects, or bad acting anymore. Thanks to movies like these, the audience is more educated and expects a better product.

What can we do to make Ninja Turtles a success again?

Ninja Turtles are part of American culture. Almost anyone under the age of 40 knows who the Ninja Turtles are. With a more educated audience, and movies like Batman Begins taking the spotlight, everyone can expect the next Ninja Turtles movie to be bigger and better

The only way to accomplish this is to delve into parts of the Ninja Turtle world that have never been fleshed out before. Batman Begins took a practical approach, everything Batman wore was not just for show, but served a very specific purpose. It is important to think practically about the Ninja Turtles as well. For example, here are a small sampling of questions that if answered, would bring a whole new dimension to the individual character of the Ninja Turtles.
  • How does Splinter teach the turtles about the world around them?
  • Why is the Shredder so evil?
  • What if the turtles were never born and never fought crime in NYC?
  • How do the turtles survive from day to day?
The turtles of 1987 were very one dimensional, which was okay for a cartoon and an unspoiled audience 20 years ago. The writers for the 2007 TMNT film tried to add depth to the turtles by giving them jobs, monetary problems, and a disconnected house-mother-rat. It tried to be epic by bringing back monsters from the past. This was a step in the right direction, but horribly executed.

Our movie adds depth, context, and an epic feel in a more realistic and practical way. It begins about 40 years ago in Japan with the story of Splinter's master, Hamato Yoshi. This is important because his lifestyle and teachings are the foundation of everything the turtles will become.

Instead of making the turtles like us by giving them jobs, we decided to bring the audience into the sewers where these unwanted mutated freaks of nature have grown up and lived their entire lives.

If these issues are not addressed in the next turtles movie will be made, seen and forgotten thereafter. We passionately spent our time over the last 4 years perfecting our vision because we believe the next movie can be great! If the studios ignore what we have done, they will be four years behind the curve and out of touch with the people who have been faithful to the Ninja Turtles.

The studio has the money, the rights, and the capability to make the next movie fantastic. We have already finished the vision and story. It would be an honor and a pleasure to be a part of the TMNT 5 team.

I can't say how stoked I am for this. The internet would literally explode.

Posted by Xile on Tuesday November 24, 2009 at 12:11pm

Wow this is just beyond normal excitement, this is the beginning of something new.

The fans have been SCREAMING for something sophisticated and dark for... probably don't wanna count how long, it may cause an uproar O_O

Fanfiction has changed to serious tone, people want to see the turtles with intense, moving emotion.

On top of that, there is the extremely popular MNT Gaiden, a FAN project that has had over a million views... if that is not enough, then what should be done to prove that the FANS need an update with TMNT?

Hahaha, hey Xile! Its Mytsik. Fancy seeing you here =P

O_O wow, good seeing you here Mystik :) (You have to remind me who you are, I have a sinus infection and it's making my head swell and my memory foggy <.<)

unfortunatly tmnt was a succes not to some fans but the general audeince the box office the new kids and half of the critic enjoye dit i mean honestly i think your vision sounds great but i figured out why it isn't being picked up the darkness the violence the blood it makes the studios frightend the first movie was dark but this takes it to a new level a level where you make friday the 13th the new bloody one look like a kiddie movie.

Posted by Administrator on Friday November 27, 2009 at 10:43pm

deshawn,

That's the whole point of what it means to produce art. My favorite color is blue, yours is green, which is the better color? Neither!

We could sit around and debate semantics all day long, but at the end of the day, TMNT only made $95mil and Dark Knight made $1bil. While you may be speaking for a large population of people who enjoy the TMNT style of story telling, there is clearly a much larger population of people who enjoy the Dark Knight's style of storytelling and want TMNT to fall into that category of "awesomeness". Obviously, that is only based on numbers, there are many other factors, but supporters of TMNT are in the minority, otherwise the movie would have performed much better.

Wizard of Oz was an incredible movie for it's time, but if you were to release the exact same movie today... it would completely flop because it does not live up to today's standards of film making. If the studios are going to keep up with the times, they need to change with the times. TMNT needs a movie for our time, that's all there is to it.

Posted by Anna on Saturday November 28, 2009 at 8:26pm

You're right, the storytelling style in the Dark Knight was amazing and I'd really want to see TMNT fall into the same category. If we're talking money here (which in my mind means nothing if the movie isn't good)if your TMNT movie fell into the same "awesomeness" category as the Dark Knight then people will probably see it in theatres more than once, I know, I saw the Dark Knight in theatres twice. I even saw some people there I'd seen previously the first time I saw it.

I wonder if a petition would work in garnering the right amount of attention from Paramount, if that's nececcesary.

Posted by Paul Levesque on Wednesday December 2, 2009 at 1:43am

There seems to be a lot of elitism in these statements. People who liked the original turtles and would like to see that continue aren't lower life forms than the people who want SRS turtles.

Posted by Placer on Wednesday December 2, 2009 at 2:29am

I don't think anyone is implying that the "SRS turtles" fans are in any way less valid than the fans of the original turtles. It's just that the latter never received a proper adaptation, beyond a nice nod in the recent "Turtles Forever" flick. There's no reason why the original turtles and their fans can't get their due.

I know but remeber darknight was a succes because it had deep characters and stuff for adult's but also had good action and a kid freindly thing going on.parent';s saw it's trailer and didn't see darkness and blood and things that weren't for kids but if they see this i feel they will say no then you will lose the family audeince the ones who usally make film's good. The turtles are marketed to kids the way your going might leave kids with nightmares it just feels to dark i loved the comic's but even larid and eastmen would agree there's a cliff and that you guy's kinda jumped off.I hope this does well in everyway but the first sold and it wasn't as dark as your taking it unfortunatly nick might not want to support this because it goes away from the new kids who are the reason dk did well and casino royal and the new remakes and new film's without the family audeince you have a very slim chance wih surviving or getting picked up.I truly hope you get a film and i will get the graphic novel but i must say unfortuantly if i was a parent this is a trutles film i would have my kids skip and my friends not because it seem's bad but it seem's well not what the 80s and 90s kid would even be use to.You should know though the new show was very dark like the first movie and did well look at that then look at your's they seem like polar opposites yet one was written by i belive larid.

I hope you guys keep there personalitys the way they are the turtles are fun to watch. What bothered me is that stop killing off the sherdder the turtles always need ultamate villian.

Posted by Spanky on Sunday December 6, 2009 at 7:01pm

Ok i must say deshawn is right. the turtles were never dark where is that commin from. they were dark figured because if them being turtles and the essence of stelth and needin to hide their secret. batman was good because it was a good story the joker actually made it better. the turtles need a story that follows that make up of the turtles everything you guys are saying is the same thing that happened in the first movie and we are loving it and would go see the movie because it follows the story of the turtles. let me help you out here the world loves naruto why because everyone in the story has been the same and done their role and the story hasnt changed. you cant loose the turtles being teenage im 22 but i still think the turtles are 14-18 even tho we are the same age they cant loose their sense of being teenage and i never seen them kill someone except shredder hell the foot was robots in the cartoon so they didnt have to kill them.

Posted by Tim Tilley on Tuesday December 8, 2009 at 6:58am

I pretty much agree with deshawn. I want to see a film that's darker, just as much as you guys but I feel that your vision may be too dark for nickelodeon and viacom/paramount.

Dark Knight was a success because of Heath Ledger only, had heath not died, it may not have been as big. I mean it will would have been big still, just not as much as it really is today.

Any, as for the Turtles an why they STILL ARE successful is all because of a licensing agent
named Mark Freedman. It was he who propose Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird to widen their possibilities
with merchandising opportunities. From there came Playmates and the toy design (which was tamed down to
kid friendly figures only loosely based on the comics.) Finally came the production of Murakami-Wolf-Swenson, whose animator Fred Wolf used the Playmates toys mixed with the comics to create the animated series. After the cartoon everything else fell into place.

I'm not sure I would agree that the superhero genre had NOT yet taken off in the way it has over the last decade. I mean we've always had super heroes for the longest time, as far back as "The Shadow" , "Flash Gordon" and "The phantom." Then later in the 1980's with cartoons like: M.A.S.K. Centurions, He-Man, She-Ra, Silverhawks and more were all considered super heroes in one way or another, not to mention the presence of Supernan, Superfriends, Adventures of Batman and Robin, Plastic Man and much more. Film versions of Batman, Superman were huge even then.

However, I agree that people today are spoiled by special effects and big budget productions even though the same can be said in the past. Star Wars was filled with all new and exciting special effects, and a big budget.

The first successful live action movie that began as an animated series was actually Superman the Movie which began as an animated series way back in the Max Fleischer days. Superman opened on December 15, 1978 in America, grossing $134.22 million in North America and $166 million in foreign countries, totaling $300.22 million worldwide and that was just the opening.

I get what you were saying though, and it was indeed a milestone for its time. I feel the movie was what really set things into high gear with the TMNT franchise.

I definitely agree that it was unfortunate that the next three films did not find the same success as their predecessor. (Even though in a way Secret of the Ooze was still a decent film and did pretty good with profits.

Why did that level of success not continue? Well, like I said above, it never stopped being a success. Just ion the last nine years we've has a new animated series, two new movies (TMNT + Turtles Forever,) new comics based on the new cartoon, a continuation of the classic Mirage comics, tons of new video games, new merchandise as well as both new toys and 25th anniversary edition action figures (even Neco had figures based on the classic Mirage line).

I do agree that the "people that are writing for Ninja Turtles now, have a vision that is completely out of touch with the audience and most especially the fans."
The only deviation of that would be with *some* of the Mirage comic issues. The new cartoon series wasn't too bad but there were some things in it that I and many other didn't care for.

I'm not against you guys or your vision in whole, I want to see you succeed. It's just that when Peter Laird sold his rights to the franchise it became a game changer. We as fans pretty much lost the battle to have a more mature and darker turtles film.

Oh and my parents are all in their 50's and they all know who the Ninja Turtles are. Heck my Mother's birthday was yesterday and she'll say turtle power if I mention the name.. that or the more embarrassing "Cowabunga dude!"

I would pay big bucks to see a GOOD TMNT movie. I'm from the current generation, but I was raised on the guys from the 80's and the 90's, and I'm dissapointed with the new movies, I'd like to see a mix of the modern world and the classic Leo, Donnie, Raph, Mikey and Splinter.
Good luck.

Is this going to be sold in an actual bookstore like
Borders or an online comic?

Posted by Inola Song Jatt Chariff on Sunday December 20, 2009 at 11:01pm

It's about time, i can speak asa faithful TMNT fan and definiely say that the Darker approach witht he turtles is the only way to go, cuz many Kids that are being first introduced to the turtles don't realize they had darker origins

and many fans among the Teenage generation after my Generation think that the Current TMNT Cartoons out there are close to the Original Comic book, and i can say in faith; sorry it isn't cuz even the Original Comic was darker

I'm glad you're making a new movie witht he intent of setting the scene of how the turtles came to be, how Mikey became so Plucky, how Don became a Tech-head, How Leo Became the Older brother type, how Raph became a Synnic, how they got thier weapons, howSpecifically they were trained and raised

Essentially put your saying you intend on Covering everything about their origins in the greatest of detail, keep it up, go on with it, and let no one stop you from it

You could try blending everything from the past and something new together, I just feel that April's more useful as a reporter, and try to avoid her sucking face with Casey, who should be portrayed the way he was in the first cartoon.

do Nickelodeon or Mirage or Eastman and Laird know about it?

From what i have been reading it sounds to be like origin typ story
it shood be an intro movie to the upcoming TMNT movie

Posted by Zudarkness on Thursday February 4, 2010 at 8:45am

They should really bring back The Ninja Turtles like it was in the comic. Forget trying to please the kids and the common patent and make the make it for what the origional comic book series was meant for, Tennager and adults. The new cartoon verison was geard toeards that however again they couldn't tell the whole story. There was a reason why The ninja Turtles comic book series were so popular. Lots of Blood, vilonce and a great story line as well. People will pay to see this. It was a vilonet comic book series, give the audience that. Bucky O hare was the same thing give them that.

Now that good old Nickeldoden has them its sadly doomed. Don't kid me wrong they have spoted a few sucess stories such as Ren and Stimpy, Rocco's modern life, Avatre, I Carly but those were indenpent from Nickeldoden that were picked up just like Disney's Fillmore, Gargoyles, Pepper Ann and Mummies alive. The unforate fate of all these great cartoon series were that The companies direction changed and the all expect I carly and Avatre.. are gone. the reason is cause the company changed direction. sure they have them on nick channel and classics etc but they were robbed due to them changing.

Now that computer techology is great they can make their graphic novel literally come to life and show the world what The TMNT was really meant to be and how the 4 turtles really acted like. Blood and all.

Good luck and give the fans what they really want.

PS I love your poster art and direction of the ninja turtles.

Of course there is still the matter of a publisher
actually printing this graphic novel, And like what
cowabunga carl said do eastman and laird or NICK
know about this

Hey Guys. Greetings from Canada. I grew up remembering coming home from school, dropping my schoolbooks, rushing upstairs and turning on the TV to watch the COOLEST show of the afternoon before dinner which was ~ Ninja Turtles. When I heard that you guys are doing a total revamp of the TMNT I was floored! I can't wait to finally see the turtles in their true element - as dark, aggressive, yet humble warriors of the shadows. It will be really awesome to see how you guys create the backstory of Oruku Saki and the ancient feud of the Ninja of Feudal Japan and how that conflict eventually makes its way to North America (particularly the sewers of New York). I'd love to be kept up-to-date about any more details which come to the surface. Keep me informed.
Sincerely,
A. Hamilton

Im glad your mixing the comedy of the cartoon and the edge of the comic. Sorry Mirage but the multi colored head bands are waaaaaaaay cooler then just red. It would be funny if you sort of made fun of the cartoon like someone on the channel 6 news asks April to wear the yellow jumpsuit or something. I think the art of Bebop and Rocksteady is what really got me pumped.Keep up the good work, this looks like it could be the greatest TMNT film ever.

Posted by Peter M. on Saturday February 13, 2010 at 3:21pm

Also, please dont make the movie rated R,Im all for the darkness but please dont make it so dark that i cant bring my little cousins along with me.

Ah yes that is all well and good, but it still
does not answer the question do Eastman, Laird or Nick
know about this?

Hey Cowabunga carl. Is your question do they know about this?

Because if your question relates to their knowabouts about our project... I have no idea. If you have their phone number or email I would love to talk to them =D.
